Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a viral disease affecting all domestic and wild species of cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, buffaloes and swine. It is considered one of the most contagious animal diseases due to several factors: numerous susceptible species, multiple transmission routes, high resistance in the environment and animal products, low infective dose, virus excretion before clinical signs appear, lack of protection between serotypes, and limited cross-protection between subtypes.
