Our history

Nowadays we are a leading agricultural cooperative with an international network of subsidiaries in 16 countries within Europe, South America and Asia. Founded over 120 years ago in the Netherlands with one goal: joint purchasing of agricultural supplies and sales promotion of agricultural products.

The past shows that knowledge, innovation and quality have been important spearheads in the creation of the current Royal Agrifirm Group. Our organisation is still in development. We strive to stay ahead in the agricultural sector. In order to achieve our goals we need to take advantage of new opportunities and anticipate on new developments.

Major milestones in our history

1870

First initiatives for founding our cooperation

As we look back on the history of merger organisation Landbouwbelang, (officially founded in 1914 and merged with Cehave in 2000), we appear to be the oldest Dutch cooperative. In 1870 a group of people with agricultural interest came together. What did they do? An important activity was the joint purchase of livestock animal feed and fertilizers. Although they didn’t have any formal statutes and rules, this collaboration is the earliest of cooperative activities.

1892

Foundation of our formal cooperative organisation

In 1892 Dutch farmers and growers started a cooperative (Landbouwvereniging Ekamp-Meerland). The goal of the cooperative: joint purchasing of agricultural supplies and sales promotion of agricultural products. In 1909 the cooperative (Coöperatieve Landbouwersbank en Handelsvereniging te Meppel) had a feed mill, grain silos and fertilizer loads. In addition there was a banking company and a station for artificial insemination. It was a daring adventure at the beginning of last century to set up a location for that time with a huge capital of 60,000 guilders (over 27,000 euros). The cooperative had actually no money to begin with. The money for the land and the building was borrowed from the bank, purely on the basis of liability. Those farmers and growers took a risk. They had an enormous faith in success, that they were willing to take that risk. They felt the need to refrain from traders who tampered with feed and fertilizers and charged high prices. Together they felt the urge to stand-up and do something about it. They founded our cooperative.

1932

First members council

With 7.200 associated members and thousands of farmers connected by member associations we were the first cooperative (Coöperatieve Landbouwersbank Meppel - CLM) in The Netherland that held a members council.
